5.0 out of 5 stars Highly engaging historical fiction mixed with heart-felt passion March 14, 2015

I have read and enjoyed 3 historical fiction books by Evelyn Tidman-Gentleman of Fortune, One Small Candle, and now this book For The King. Each of these books will reignite the times in history and along with historical facts, will immerse the reader in page-turning plots. Again, in excellent fashion, Tidman captivated my attention from start to finish in the midst of the English Civil War.
In a face off of loyalty and rulership, those in support of the King( Royalists) would battle Cromwell's Parliamentarian forces. Sir Haman L'Estrange's declaration for the King will result in a bloodbath war in an effort to keep King's Lynn. His wealthy estate and reputation would be tested in a fire of affliction with his family's destiny hanging in the balance. Sir Haman's son Roger will emerge from a mere youth at age 18 to a mature man whose destiny becomes uncertain.
Son Roger L'Estrange would face more than a battle for the King; it would be a battle for his love Ruth Pell that crossed in "forbidden" Puritan territory. Call it fate or luck but this initial "accident" that acquainted them would play a key part in a way never dreamed of. It will be love that hangs on until the end...only not how you would imagine it to be. With plenty of twists and circumstances Evelyn Tidman will prove true to the phrase that it isn't over until it's over.
The reader will feel deeply the pangs of devotion and love that seemingly has no bounds. This novel will wrap around your heart while you lose yourself in the unending dramatic plot. A highly recommended read for this as well as her other fine historical books.

For the King is an enthralling novel set in the 1600's during the war between the royalist supporters of King Charles and the parliamentarian forces under Cromwell. The book is exciting,to say the least and is an astonishing story of love , not only for king and country, but the forbidden love between two people on opposing sides. The very believable dialogue and detail take you all the way back to the 17th century. The author is to be commended, not only for her accuracy, but for the passion it infuses in its readers. I will certainly recommend it.

I really enjoyed this book! Having read Evelyn's previous two books and gained great pleasure from them, I was hopeful that For the King would be equally as good. And it was! I wasn't disappointed as it is one of those books where you just want to know what happens next. The detail in the background to this story is incredible. I know King's Lynn and recognised the street and building names. A map of Lyn from the relevant time would probably be useful to the reader. I look forward to the next instalment of the life of Roger L'Estrange.
